Best Things to Do in Saariselkä (2026)

Updated 2026 · Curated by local scouts

Saariselkä is about the fells and the wilderness on its doorstep: ride or hike up Kaunispää for the view, walk into Urho Kekkonen National Park, pan for gold at Tankavaara, warm up in the Kiilopää smoke sauna, and head out on a husky or reindeer safari. Aurora hunting tops it all off in winter.

Saariselkä works in every season, but the through-line is always the surrounding fell wilderness. In summer and autumn it is hiking, gold panning and the midnight sun; in winter it is skiing, safaris and the northern lights. These are the five experiences worth planning a trip around, whatever time of year you come.

1

Kaunispää fell

The most accessible of Saariselkä's fells, Kaunispää rises right above the village and can be reached on foot, by car or by ski lift. The 438-metre summit gives a 360-degree sweep over open fell country, doubles as a downhill ski hill with Finland's longest sledding run in winter, and is one of the easiest aurora platforms in the area. There's a café at the top for the view.

From the scout

Drive or take the lift up for sunset, then stay for the dark; on a clear winter night Kaunispää is one of the simplest places near the village to catch the aurora.

2

Urho Kekkonen National Park

One of Europe's largest protected wildernesses begins right at the edge of Saariselkä. UKK is open fell tundra, clear rivers and old forest, home to reindeer, golden eagles and the odd bear or lynx, with a trail network ranging from family nature loops to multi-day routes deep into the fells. The Saariselkä and Kiilopää gateways make it unusually easy to step from a resort into true wilderness.

Start from the Saariselkä gate for day hikes; pick up route and hut information at the Kiehinen/Kiilopää visitor points before heading in, and respect that this is genuine wilderness.

3

Pan for gold at Tankavaara

Gold was discovered in this area in 1865, and at Tankavaara, about 30 km south of the village, you can still pan for it yourself and visit the Gold Museum (Kultamuseo) that tells the story of Lapland's gold rush. It's a genuinely fun, hands-on stop, especially with kids, and there are easy nature trails and a café at the site too.

Have a go at panning rather than just touring the museum; you keep any gold you find, and the staff will show you the technique.

4

Kiilopää fell & smoke sauna

Kiilopää is one of the highest fells in the area, with a short, rewarding climb to a wide wilderness panorama from the Kiilopää gate. The Fell Centre at its base is famous for its traditional smoke sauna paired with a dip in the cold stream, the quintessential Lapland warm-and-cool ritual after a day on the fells. It's a more rugged, remote feel than the village.

Do the smoke sauna and ice-stream dip after your hike; it's the local way to recover, and the contrast is unforgettable.

5

Husky, reindeer & snowmobile safaris

In winter the wilderness around Saariselkä becomes a playground of safaris: husky-sled rides through snowy forest, reindeer sleighs with local herders, and snowmobile trips out to aurora viewpoints. They're the classic way to cover ground in the deep snow and to meet the Sámi reindeer-herding culture that still defines this part of Lapland.

Book safaris in advance for peak winter weeks, and choose a small-group husky or reindeer trip over a quick photo stop for a more genuine experience.
