Levi

Finland's biggest ski resort, an all-season fell in the heart of Lapland

Levi is Finland's largest and most polished ski resort, a lively fell village near Kittilä airport with World Cup slopes in winter, a gondola-served bike park in summer, and northern lights, huskies and reindeer on the doorstep.

Levi rises above the village of Sirkka in Kittilä, in the heart of Finnish Lapland, and is the country's biggest and best-connected ski resort. Its own airport (Kittilä) is about 15 minutes away, which makes it the easiest of the Lapland fells to reach, and the compact village packs in more hotels, restaurants, shops and après-ski than anywhere else in the north.

In winter it hosts an Alpine Ski World Cup slalom and offers the widest piste network in Finland, plus a huge cross-country trail system, husky and reindeer safaris, snowmobiling and excellent northern-lights watching. From spring the fell reinvents itself: Finland's first gondola (from 2000) carries hikers and downhill bikers to the summit, and more than 70 km of marked trails and the Levi Bike Park open up.

It's livelier and more developed than the quieter fells like Ylläs, which is exactly the appeal for many, ski or ride by day, then eat reindeer and chase the aurora by night. Come for the slopes and the easy access, and make the most of a village built for it.

A local's tip. Levi is the most convenient Lapland resort thanks to Kittilä airport, so it books up fast for Christmas, New Year and the February-March ski weeks, reserve early. Stay in the village to walk to the slopes, lifts and restaurants. For aurora, drive a few minutes out of the lit village or take the gondola up the fell.
