Savonlinna

Lake Saimaa's castle town and home of the opera festival

Built across islands on Lake Saimaa, Savonlinna wraps a medieval lakeside castle, a world-famous opera festival and old-fashioned steamboats into Finland's most atmospheric Lakeland town.

Savonlinna sits in the heart of Finnish Lakeland, spread across islands in the vast Saimaa lake system in the south-east of the country. Its centrepiece is Olavinlinna, the world's northernmost medieval stone castle, rising straight out of the water on its own rock, and every summer that castle courtyard becomes the stage for the Savonlinna Opera Festival, one of the most spectacular opera settings anywhere.

This is steamboat country: Savonlinna is often called the steamboat capital of Europe, and white-hulled vessels still run cruises out into the Saimaa archipelago from the harbour by the market square. The town is small and walkable, with a pretty old quarter of wooden houses, a lively lakeside kauppatori (market square) famous for the local lörtsy pastry, and water on every side.

Beyond the town, Lake Saimaa is a maze of islands and national parks, and home to the rare Saimaa ringed seal. Come for the castle and the opera, stay for the lake, the steamboats and a fried-vendace dinner by the water.

A local's tip. Book accommodation and opera tickets months ahead for the July festival, it's Finland's priciest hotel town that month. Take at least one steamboat cruise from the market-square harbour, and try the lörtsy pastry at the kauppatori. The classic photo of Olavinlinna is from the Tallisaari side or a passing boat.
