Ruka
Finland's all-season fell resort, at the gates of Oulanka
Ruka pairs one of Finland's longest ski seasons with the country's most famous hiking, the Karhunkierros trail and Oulanka National Park, plus an award-winning summer bike park, all from one compact pedestrian village.
Ruka is a fell resort in Kuusamo, in Finland's far north-east, built around a compact pedestrian village (Rukankylä) at the foot of Rukatunturi. It has one of the longest ski seasons in the country, often from October into May, but it is just as much a summer and autumn destination, sitting at the gateway to Oulanka National Park and the legendary Karhunkierros (Bear's Ring) trail.
In winter it is a proper ski-in, ski-out resort with lifts, slopes and a huge cross-country network spreading straight from the village. Come the thaw, the same slopes turn into Ruka Bike Park, named Finland's Bike Park of the Year in 2023, and the surrounding fells open up hundreds of kilometres of hiking and gravel-cycling routes through pine forest, rapids and ruska-coloured autumn fells.
It is less polished and more outdoorsy than the Alps, and that's the point: a small village of restaurants, rental shops and saunas, wrapped in raw Arctic nature. Come for the slopes or the trail, and eat well, Ruka even has a Michelin-starred kitchen in Restaurant Tapio.
A local's tip. Base yourself in the pedestrian village so you can walk to lifts, trails, restaurants and rental shops. For the Karhunkierros, start at Hautajärvi and finish in Ruka so you end at the village comforts. Late August to mid-September is peak ruska (autumn colour) and the best hiking window.
