Kaunispää fell
The most popular and easiest aurora spot in Saariselkä: a short drive or lift ride above the village to a 438-metre summit with unobstructed 360-degree views. The elevation and open horizon get you above and away from much of the village light, and there's shelter and a café at the top while you wait for activity to pick up.

Aurora minibuses often stop here; if you're driving yourself, face north and give your eyes 15-20 minutes to adjust to the dark before judging the display.

Kiilopää & Fell Centre
More rugged and remote than Kaunispää, Kiilopää sits in real wilderness away from village lights, giving darker skies and dramatic fell silhouettes under the aurora. Staying or stopping at the Fell Centre lets you step straight out onto dark terrain, and warm up afterwards in its famous smoke sauna.

Combine an evening sauna at the Fell Centre with aurora watching; you can dash out to the dark and back to the heat as the lights come and go.

Urho Kekkonen National Park clearings
The national park's open fells, frozen lakes and clearings are natural aurora observatories, with remoteness guaranteeing genuinely dark skies. Guided aurora hunts often head to spots like Iisakkipää fell or out into the park where there's no light pollution at all, the purest way to see the lights here.

Going with a guide is worth it for the park: they know which clearings and fells to aim for based on the night's cloud and activity, and handle the cold-weather logistics.

Glass igloos at Kakslauttanen
If you'd rather watch the sky from a warm bed, the glass igloos at Kakslauttanen and the area's other aurora cabins are purpose-built for it, with heated glass roofs angled at the northern sky. It removes the cold-and-wait problem entirely: you simply lie back and watch the lights from under the duvet when they appear.

Set a phone alarm or use the resort's aurora wake-up service so you don't sleep through a display; keep the igloo lights off for the clearest view.

Away from the village lights
You don't always need to go far: heading just out of the resort centre toward the open fells or the aurora-cabin areas like the Northern Lights Village gets you enough darkness on an active night. The key is a clear northern horizon and minimal artificial light, both easy to find within a short distance of Saariselkä.
