Pieni Karhunkierros (Little Bear's Ring)
The 12 km Pieni Karhunkierros in Oulanka National Park is the single best day hike in the area, a greatest-hits loop from the Juuma trailhead taking in the Jyrävä and Kallioinen waterfalls, the Myllykoski rapids and a famous suspension bridge over the gorge. It packs the drama of the full Karhunkierros into a single day on a well-marked, duck-boarded trail. For most visitors this is the Oulanka experience, and it's free to walk.

Go clockwise from Juuma and bring a packed lunch for the Myllykoski hut, a classic rest stop by the rapids.

Valtavaara summit (huiputus)
The Valtavaara climb is the best short fell hike right by Ruka: a roughly 6 km route up to an open summit ridge with sweeping views over the surrounding fells and forests, especially spectacular when the ruska turns the slopes red and gold. It's steep in places but short enough for an afternoon, and it sits in the Valtavaara-Pyhävaara nature reserve a few minutes from the village. The payoff-to-effort ratio is hard to beat.

From the scout
Time it for late August to mid-September ruska, or for the long light of a summer evening.

Konttainen fell
Konttainen is the other quick fell climb from the Ruka side, a shorter, gentler walk to a viewpoint over Lake Kitka and the fell horizon. It pairs naturally with Valtavaara for a fuller day, or stands alone as an easy leg-stretch with a big reward at the top. Like the other routes here it's free and well-marked, and a good first hike to get your bearings on the landscape.

Combine Konttainen and Valtavaara via the connecting ridge trail for a longer loop with two summits.

Kiutaköngäs rapids & Oulanka day trails
From the Oulanka Visitor Centre, short, family-friendly trails lead to the thundering Kiutaköngäs rapids, where the Oulanka river churns over red-rock walls, one of the most photographed spots in the park. It's the easiest way to taste Oulanka without committing to the big loops: flat, well-made paths through pine forest and river meadows, with the visitor centre for maps and coffee. A perfect gentle half-day.

Pyhän Jyssäys trail
A scenic shorter trail in the Ruka area, the Pyhän Jyssäys route winds through old forest and fell terrain close to the village, a quieter alternative to the busier summits when you just want a good walk in the woods. It's well-suited to an easy day or a warm-up hike, and keeps you in the raw northern nature that defines the whole area without a long drive to a trailhead.

A good lower-effort option for a rest day between bigger hikes or skiing.

Karhunkierros (the full Bear's Ring)
For those with several days, the 80 km Karhunkierros is Finland's most famous long-distance trail, running from Hautajärvi through the heart of Oulanka to Ruka village. It strings together the rapids of the Kitka and Oulanka rivers, deep gorges, suspension bridges, wilderness huts and the fell tops of Konttainen and Valtavaara, and typically takes 3-7 days. It's the bucket-list hike of the north, and finishing in Ruka means hot food and a sauna at the end.
