Ylläs has around 200 km of marked summer bike trails plus a multi-award-winning lift-served bike park at Ylläsjärvi. Easy family rides circle the lakes at Äkäslompolo; the Kukastunturi and Kaulavaara routes serve experienced riders. In winter, ~100 km of groomed fatbike trails, the most in Finland, take over.

Ylläs was named Finland's mountain-biking destination of the year, and it earns that two ways. There is the lift-served bike park on the Ylläsjärvi side for downhill and flow laps, and then there is roughly 200 kilometres of marked trail threading the fells and lakes for everyone who would rather pedal. In winter the same place quietly becomes the country's biggest fatbike network.

The riding splits cleanly by appetite: easy, near-flat lake loops around the villages, longer gravel-and-fell rides like Kukastunturi, and a few genuinely technical lines for people who pack a spare derailleur hanger. Rentals, including full-suspension bikes and fatbikes, are at both ski bases. Below, easiest first.

1

Ylläs Bike Park

Lift-served downhill and flow riding with fifteen trails, from a 150-metre pump track to a full-enduro line of nearly four kilometres. The gondola and chairlift do the climbing, so you get lap after lap without ever pedalling uphill, and the long flow lines suit nervous beginners as much as fast locals. It was named Finland's Bike Park of the Year in both 2024 and 2025, which tells you the trail building is good. Rent a full-suspension bike and pads at the base and you are set for the day.

From the scout

The 2026 season runs roughly mid-June to late September, daily 11:00-18:00. Rent a full-suspension bike and protective gear at the base and book a lesson if it's your first lift-served day.

2

Äkäslompolo Lake Loop & Story Trail

The easiest ride in Ylläs and the best place to find your feet on a fatbike. The roughly 8.5-kilometre loop circles Lake Äkäslompolo on smooth, reinforced path and boardwalk, with lake and fell views the whole way and twenty story points if you are riding with kids. It passes the Navettagalleria, a converted cow barn with a cafe, farm animals and a little practice track in the yard. Flat, scenic and forgiving, it makes a lovely first evening spin.

From the scout

The best entry-level loop for testing a rented fatbike. Stop at the Navettagalleria yard, which has a café, farm animals and a small practice track.

3

Kesänkijärvi MTB Loop

A genuinely scenic ride on mostly smooth gravel and path, with two wide duckboard sections you can walk if you prefer. Take the short six-kilometre loop with kids, or string together the full circuit of around twenty kilometres past the wilderness cafes for a proper half day. The Kesängin Keidas cafe sits about midway and makes the obvious coffee stop. There are few rocks and roots, so it is approachable terrain on a rented bike.

From the scout

Pick the ~6 km loop with kids, the duckboard sections are the only spots you may want to dismount. Great beginner fatbike terrain.

4

Kukastunturi Ride (Kukastunturin polkaisu)

A local classic and a real leg-burner. The long, sustained climb to Kukastunturi is paid back with fell panoramas that keep shifting as you gain height, on a mix of gravel and open fell trail. Strong riders can extend it into a thirty-five to thirty-eight kilometre day by adding the Keskinenlaki section. There is no shelter and no water up top, so carry your own and pick a settled day for it.

From the scout

Can be extended into a 35-38 km Kukastunturi + Keskinenlaki combo for a big day. Carry water; the fell tops are exposed.

5

Kaulavaara-Tunturijärvi (technical backcountry)

For experienced riders who want roots, rocks and solitude rather than groomed flow. This technical backcountry line runs on rocky singletrack and boardwalk outside the national-park boundary, so it sees a fraction of the traffic of the core trails. Ride it on a full mountain bike rather than a gravel bike, and bring a buddy and a repair kit, because it is remote. The reward is having a properly wild corner of Ylläs to yourself.

From the scout

It's outside the park boundary so sees far less traffic, ride with a buddy and a repair kit, on a full MTB rather than a gravel bike.

Winter Fatbiking

Come winter, Ylläs grooms around a hundred kilometres of fatbike trail, more than anywhere else in Finland, and riding the frozen forest on packed snow is its own quiet thrill. Guided tours and e-assist rentals make it easy to try, and the trails are maintained right through to spring. After fresh snowfall the surface goes soft, so drop your tyre pressure and take it slow. The fast, firm crust of late-season spring riding is the secret best time.

From the scout

After fresh snow the trails go soft, so drop your tyre pressure, and yield to pedestrians who share the same routes. Spring snow-crust riding is the fastest and most fun.

Quick Comparison

Surface and distance vary by route; the bike park runs roughly mid-June to late September.
