The lakeside kauppatori is the heart of Savonlinna shopping: stalls of local produce, lake fish, crafts and souvenirs right on the harbour, plus the market cafes and the lörtsy kiosks. It's as much an experience as a shop, browsing with the water and the steamboats alongside, and the best place to pick up edible local specialities to take home. Seasonal and liveliest in summer.

The old quarter along Linnankatu, with its atmospheric wooden houses on the way to the castle, holds the town's most characterful small shops, crafts, design and the odd gallery or boutique. It's a pleasant browse combined with a walk through the prettiest part of town, away from the everyday high-street stores. The setting makes even window-shopping worthwhile.

Savonlinna's compact centre, around Olavinkatu and the pedestrian core, covers the everyday shops, Finnish high-street brands, supermarkets, a small shopping centre and design and homeware stores.
